Best Australian Organic Coffee

Natalie is a co-owner of a Byron Beans and in the video she tells a little about the Byron Beans story. How they got started and why they do what the do?

We got started way back in 1999. My now husband Mike (we weren’t married at the time)decided he needed a “sea change” and was looking for a better life.He found some land near Byron Bay, he did some research and then he turned his passion for coffee into becoming a coffee farmer.

So lots of back breaking work over the next couple years; he had to clear the land (formerly an avocado, macadamia and lantana!) do all the things that a farmer does and he started to plant up to 30 thousand plus coffee trees. It was back breaking back.On into the 20 century and within 4 to 5 years we had our first harvest.Initially Mike was selling his green coffee beans but eventually decided his coffee was pretty good which prompted the move into introducing our own roasting label in 2007.

Basically Mike takes care of the farming. He has a couple of farm workers to help with the organic fertilizing, pruning the trees etc. And the biggest workload is harvesting time.We have Mike’s parents to help. My role is to run the other side of the business. I do the roasting and packing, marketing, packaging the coffee; that’s my role. But when it comes to harvest time, which is in October, it all hands on deck to help.

We had a good harvest this year (we’re not long finished) and because we’d done a lot pruning in the last year, so the yield wasn't fantastic but the quality was excellent.

Now we've been transitioning to being certified organic. This process has taken 3 years and in December 2013 our coffee becomes fully organic certified. We've got some new packaging coming for our 100% organic coffee. It even comes with a ripper zipper to keep the roasted coffee fresh.

The harvested coffee gets suns dried and can be stored in sacks for up to couple to 7 years.

We roast on demand. So the customer gets the freshest possible coffee.

Were Australia owned, were Australia grown, Australia made and it’s all in the family and we are also now certified organic and that make us quite unique in the market and our coffee makes a beautiful cup of coffee.
